Glowing Auras and 'Black Money': The Pentagon's Mysterious U.F.O. Program https://nyti.ms/2kB62aH

First off, I'm sorry for my readers who get repeatedly sent to the New York Times that I know has a pay wall. I think the NYT is worth subscribing to. It contains real news and facts as compared to the bullshit fake news that gets posed to Facebook.

Some of you know my fascination with UFOs which grew much stronger after visiting Roswell and it's outstanding small museum full of detailed accounts from many many people describing the same event. These 2 articles from the NYT describe the findings of a recent Pentagon program studying UFOs. All I can say is... They are out there.

How Rex Tillerson Wrecked the State Department | The New Yorker

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-rex-tillerson-wrecked-the-state-department

"It's tempting to have some sympathy for Tillerson, given the boss he works for. President Trump seems to change his foreign policy daily, threatening war with North Korea one day, trashing nato the next, or passing highly classified intelligence to Russian officials the day after that. When Tillerson travelled to China to try to search for a peaceful resolution to the nuclear crisis in North Korea, the President tweeted that Tillerson was "wasting his time." "Save your energy, Rex. We'll do what has to be done," the President said. Shortly after his return, Tillerson, in a meeting with White House officials, was heard calling Trump a "fucking moron."

What Explains U.S. Mass Shootings? International Comparisons Suggest an Answer https://nyti.ms/2hODjP5

""In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate," Dan Hodges, a British journalist, wrote in a post on Twitter two years ago, referring to the 2012 attack that killed 20 young students at an elementary school in Connecticut. "Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.""

""This city has a history of fighting back against oppression, whether it's dumping tea in the harbor or a bunch of dudes standing around with bandannas screaming at neo-Nazis," said a 21-year-old protester in Boston who would identify himself only as "Frosty" and wore an American flag to obscure much of his face."

Why Instagram Is the Worst Social Media for Mental Health | Time.com

http://time.com/4793331/instagram-social-media-mental-health/

"Instagram is the worst social media network for mental health and wellbeing, according to a recent survey of almost 1,500 teens and young adults. While the photo-based platform got points for self-expression and self-identity, it was also associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying and FOMO, or the "fear of missing out.""

Crews Blast and Burrow Through Snow to Open Yosemite’s Tioga Pass | The California Report | KQED News

https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2017/06/15/yosemite-national-park-tioga-pass-highway-120-season-opening/

""We're almost at the middle of June and we still have lots of passes that aren't open," said Florene Trainor, a spokeswoman for Caltrans.

Few roads traverse the Sierra Nevada, and mountain passes are typically open by Memorial Day.

The road that crosses the Sierra through Yosemite, Highway 120, remained closed this week as crews dig out from snows that topped 20 feet and drifted well over 50 feet.

On a recent day, the park's entrance station at 9,945-foot-high Tioga Pass was buried in snow."

"At every turn since his firing, Comey has played his hand perfectly, controlling the narrative and preserving his well-earned reputation for integrity and professionalism, while Trump has only made his situation worse every time opened his mouth or logged onto Twitter," said Dan Pfeiffer, who was a senior adviser to President Barack Obama."

At His Own Wake, Celebrating Life and the Gift of Death - NYTimes.com

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/05/25/world/canada/euthanasia-bill-john-shields-death.html

"No one knew what to expect from a living wake, not even Penny Allport, the life-cycle celebrant Mr. Shields had asked to help guide the party and preside over his death the next morning. She was trained and certified for funerals and weddings, but nothing like this.

Efforts had been made to convert what normally felt like a doctor's waiting room into a place worthy of the occasion. A pale green hospice blanket served as a tablecloth over two adjacent coffee tables, which were decorated with a vase of simple daisies and daffodils and strewn with cue cards, each of which bore one of Mr. Shields's favorite quotations in colored ink.

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" – Mary Oliver

"There is nothing more mysterious than destiny — of a person, of our species, of our planet, or of the universe itself." — Brian Swimme"

A Terrorist’s Teenage Target

"I know there is nothing I can say right now to make the survivors of the Manchester bombing feel any better. The guilt for me began the day of the blast. Seeing Liana's mother is especially painful. I see her looking at me and I know she is imaging her daughter at my age. But I would tell the survivors to stay strong and focus on your recovery. You have to be very strong to recover."

Germany's Outdoor Preschools

Running Free in Germany's Outdoor Preschools https://nyti.ms/2rvMeqY

""It's terrible that kids today know all about technology but nothing about the little bird outside their window," Peters said, gesturing out toward the woods and sounding like any number of quotable Germans, from Goethe to Beethoven to Bismarck, all of whom have rhapsodized on the psychic benefits of spending time in the forest.

After lunch, Baule showed me a photo album, filled mostly with pictures taken in the last couple of years. A few children got interested and came over to sit in her lap, excited to see themselves "as babies." One photograph captured the image of a towheaded boy of about 3, stripping bark off a stick with a jackknife. In another, a different boy was crushing walnuts with a log. A third picture depicted four children walking across a gravelly path, completely naked and covered with mud."

Shinrin-Yoku - Health Benefits of Walking Outside

http://www.oprah.com/spirit/shinrin-yoku-health-benefits-of-walking-outside

"By combining mindfulness and spending time in nature—two activities that have restorative properties on their own—shinrin-yoku can yield significant health advantages: A study conducted across 24 forests in Japan found that when people strolled in a wooded area, their levels of the stress hormone cortisol plummeted almost 16 percent more than when they walked in an urban environment. And the effects were quickly apparent: Subjects' blood pressure showed improvement after about 15 minutes of the practice. But one of the biggest benefits may come from breathing in chemicals called phytoncides, emitted by trees and plants. Women who logged two to four hours in a forest on two consecutive days saw a nearly 40 percent surge in the activity of cancer-fighting white blood cells, according to one study. "

‘The Internet Is Broken’: @ev Is Trying to Salvage It - NYTimes.com

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/05/20/technology/evan-williams-medium-twitter-internet.html

"I think the internet is broken," he says. He has believed this for a few years, actually. But things are getting worse. "And it's a lot more obvious to a lot of people that it's broken."

People are using Facebook to showcase suicides, beatings and murder, in real time. Twitter is a hive of trolling and abuse that it seems unable to stop. Fake news, whether created for ideology or profit, runs rampant. Four out of 10 adult internet users said in a Pew survey that they had been harassed online. And that was before the presidential campaign heated up last year.

"I thought once everybody could speak freely and exchange information and ideas, the world is automatically going to be a better place," Mr. Williams says. "I was wrong about that."

In the US, Shopping malls are dying

"Travel is booming. Hotel occupancy is booming. Domestic airlines have flown more passengers each year since 2010, and last year U.S. airlines set a record, with 823 million passengers. The rise of restaurants is even more dramatic. Since 2005, sales at "food services and drinking places" have grown twice as fast as all other retail spending. In 2016, for the first time ever, Americans spent more money in restaurants and bars than at grocery stores."

Hackers warn Trump

" In a lengthy open letter to Donald Trump, the Shadow Brokers explain that they've returned to protest the US missile strike against a Syrian airbase Thursday – an action that marked Trump's first significant move directly opposing the will of Russian president Vladimir Putin. And they warn the president that he will face consequences if he doesn't revert back to his former policy of leaving Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, a Putin ally, alone.

The file contained a huge cache of specialized NSA malware, including dozens of backdoor programs and 10 exploits, two of them targeting previously unknown security holes in Cisco routers—a basic building block of the internet. The leak electrified the computer security world, and sent Cisco and other companies scrambling to fix the security holes and lock out the NSA."
